Factory Air Intake Removal

Exactly how hard is it to remove the factory air intake, more specifically the "bong" that's in the fender well? I'm wanting to save up for the AEM CAI, but figured that I might as well go ahead and remove that fender-well piece now to remove some of the restriction from my intake seeing as how I'd have to remove it later anyway. I don't see any possibility of water getting in there, especially with me having the K&N panel filter installed, so I think it might be worth my while.
not that hard bro

hardest part would be jacking up the car to remove the fenderliner.

then its just 1 bolt holding the "bong" to the washer fluid resovoir. but
that bolt can be a biatch.

good luck

So you don't have to remove the front bumper to get to it like they say at Induction Dynamics? SWEET!!! I thought that sounded like a bit much to do. Thanks for the info El Guapo! Also, what does removing the fenderliner involve?
So I won't even have to take the wheel off? Man, that's awesome. I'm not expecting too much of a gain from it, but just looking at that thing... I mean it just screams of restricting incoming air flow. Maybe I'll get a bit that nice sucking sound a good intake makes. I know there will be some kind of improvement. I appreciate all of your info dude. I'm in college and a member of the South Carolina Air National Guard, but back to the college thing, next week is my Spring Break. What could be more fun than spending some quality time with my Sunfire, a few sockets, and a ratchet all in the name of going a bit faster?
well you might have to take off the wheel but if you jack it up high enough,
it should be enough to get the fender well liner out...

when you get the CAI you'll need to get to that same area, so make yourself
familar with taking the fenderwell liner off/on.

Thanks for the info El Guapo! I'll be putting it to good use next week. Where's a good place to get an AEM CAI intake anyway? By this I of course mean who has the best price I need to know how much to save up for. They're a little over $200 aren't they?
Hey El Guapo, I attempted to remove the "bong" only to find that the lowest portion of it has a 13mm bolt that comes in from the washer fluid reservoir. WTF? I saw the 10mm bolt that was in plain view and it was the least of my worries. I didn't have the time to finish the job so I had to piece everything back to close it up until I get another chance. I'm thinking that I'm going to have to remove the washer fluid reservoir enough to remove that #%mn bolt. Also was your bong glued to the foam sleeve that connects the air box to the bong? Any ideas on what all is involved in getting this damn thing off? Any help would be great. Thanks.

Thanks El Guapo, but I've already been to this site trying to find an answer to this damn thing. They say that it is held in with two plastic clips, but mine only has that 13mm bolt that protrudes into the lowest section of the bong in addition to that one 10mm bolt. I guess I got the 2003 Sunfire with the special hard-as-hell intake package. I don't know what I'll have to do, but that @!#$ is coming off to make room for that AEM CAI one day!
I'm going to try again Friday morning. I'll be sure to let you know how everything turns out. Also, did you have to lower the washer fluid reservoir to get to that 13mm bolt on your Sunfire El Guapo? There's no other way for me to get to that 13mm bolt than to lower the reservoir an inch or three. Then it should be like you said, just pull like all get out and let the Sunfire start breathing better! Any tips on the washer fluid reservoir?

I didn't have to remove my Washer Fluid Reservoir when I did mine,
but
Theres a bolt you can barely get to on the other side of the WFR
if you can get to that bolt you can unscrew the bong from the WFR

then just pull that mutha till if pops off.

I just remember alot of pulling when I removed mine....

I hope that helped

Well, the deed is done and my car is free of its bong. Thank God! It was easy once I found the three bolts that hold the WFR in place. I got those suckers out and shifted it to where I could get that 13mm bolt out. Then I pulled a bit and the bong just came out nicely. I'm sure that it'll help me out for now while I await the arrival of my AEM Cold Air Intake! The car already seems to be doing a bit better with gas mileage. I watch that stuff like a hawk! Thanks again to everyone for their ideas and suggestions! A big thanks to plyerforever01 who gave me the info about those three WFR bolts!
