Sorry - I couldn't resist.
I suppose if the ION wasn't so overweight... it would have a chance...

I haven't weighed mine, but the sales brochure says it weighs 2653lbs. Which I believe is lighter than my Cav.

That'd be roughly 100 pounds lighter than mine even though it's a 2002. I don't think there's been that much of a weight change over 2003 and 2004.
Saturn's are Plastic bodied, not steel.
Plastic doesnt mean lighter, if you had a clue as to what a space frame was you would realize that the plastic bolts to a pretty strudy metal frame that goes throughout the underside of the panels. Just like a Fiero which contrary to popular belief is NOT a light weight car it weighs in just around 2700 pounds. The Ion being a much larger car then the Fiero would suggest its space frame being heavier.

What a d*ck, I realize that it bolts to metal, but aren't those body panels lighter? And as Todd Miller posted, In the brochure it says it is around 2600lbs, so obviously it isn't heavier. Man too bad I didn't have a clue, I thought the WHOLES CAR was PLASTIC.
Alright you two... chill out. Instead of being assholes like on the Org, why not be cool about it and just stay on topic with no flaming?
truebluels watch the language man !!!! use the $$ instead please
and i thought the ION were around the same wieght as the grand ams
Hey, I expected to be censored out.
Anyways, I'm pretty sure if you compared weights, the ION is
just a bit heavier. and it's not just the plastic either. They build
these things pretty heavy duty, to take crashes and the like.
And to take the abuse of those owners too...

If I had a dime for every time I saw Echotec, errr, Ecotec spelled wrong, I'd be rich!
My Grand Am is supposed to weigh about 3100lbs, man what a weight disadvantage.
saturn actually used steel in body panels? hmm i thought they were just made out of melted down rubber maid cans.. =)

And i thought my L series had a weight disadvantage...
saturns are made out of old rubbermaid cans so i heard... lol
that maybe so but look at all the cars now using a Saturn Engine
Hahaha, the ECO is not a Saturn engine.
The Saturn is a platform (one of many) the ECO is used in.
If you hate on Saturn, you're making fun of yourself.
Lets try to not turn this into JBO, please, too many arguments over nothing there.
I want to learn about my ECO, and this is the place to do it, as soon as more people join.
despite all weight issues, the saturn ion has a five speed auto.
the gear ratios are complete @!#$. my girlfriend has one, it is pretty good on the highway, but as far as acceloration, they really cant compete.
Kim refuses to believe our cars have the same power plant.
Well if u think about it The Ecotec first came in the 2000 Saturn LS (like mine) then spread to other platforms so in that since it is a saturn engine.
In a sense yeah, first american ECO as far as I know.
Still, not a Saturn motor though.
the other engines that are "Ecotec" are not built the same way as our 2.2 and the true name of those are Ecotech. Just do some research on the subject
sounds like it was an auto ION.
wouldnt gm make that engine? and if im right it then all of you guys are wrong?
