Well, I did burn out a PCM and a ignition pack. The problem that I had was the same that everyone else was talking about: Idling. It would drop, and then idle about 1100 and stay there. OBDII said throttle position sensor and manifold absolute pressure sensor, so I checked it. Voltage readings all over the place, not even moving the pedal! Yup, 18,000, and she already needed a new brain.
02 LS Sport Coupe. Only probs so far that I had to have service for:

1. Reverse light switch in the transmission went out.
2. Slave cylinder for the clutch lost its seal and leaked out all the clutch fluid. (Sucks to have the clutch pedal go to the floor and stay there and the transmission is still engaged.)

Other than that, the only other quirk I have noticed is when I'm idling and the ECU enters closed loop mode when the engine warms up, the RPM's drop to about 500 for about half a second and then it idles normally again. I also can't wait to replace the stock motor and transmission mounts. The car lurches back and forth way too much at low RPM (especially in rush hour traffic).

Oh yeah, I have over 57,000 miles on it.

I've had my 03' now since Oct 2003. Since I have had it I have had the IAC valve replaced due to the car stalling in neutral or low rpm's, the radiator needed to be repaired the seems let go along the bottem, and my 5th ring syncro cracked not sure how but around the same time I was being shown how to slip shift using the rpm's. When I asked about the shifting they told me it wouldnt have been caused by that unless I was grinding the gears hard. The dealer did say though that each of the problems that I have encountered were out of the ordinary. A few of the members in my club who are or were owners of 2.4L's all said they were impressed when they took an eco for a spin, they all pretty much said the same thing " A lot of pep "

Ok, Im going to post this for my roomate.

He is having a very odd idle problem. the motor seams to back fire here and there in no particular pattern. We replaced the coilpack and sparkboots and it did nothing but give us a check engine light!

any clues?

Yeah it's me phlat is talking about....so you think the reflash should help? I had the one done a while ago when the recall was out. It just started doing this like a month ago. It almost dies it seems....drops to around 500ish, sometimes below...at night when it does it i see the headlights and stuff dim too.
Driving it's fine, just when at stoplights and stopsigns...seems to be the same thing many ppl here have said.

Well...finally had time to take it to the dealer....the ignition module they said was leaking...and that was what was causing it...so they replaced it for free, which was sweet considering my car's rebuilt and isnt under warranty....but it runs like a dream now...idles smooth as silk...I LOVE MY CAR AGAIN!!!

My car passed 39K miles. Owned since 6/03. It is a 2003 Cav. 5spd, XM and Sunroof.

Issues: Decal emissions came off.
HVAC cable sheard off, repaired under warranty
Got the rear light bulb issue, fixed it myself.

That's it. When I had the dash apart, they did the decal and the ECM re-flash.

Still runs well. Drives well but the brake fluid is down so I know I need brakes soon.

you know that the rear light bulb from outside are a Recall.
Since I am a fairly competent mechanic(having restored a few cars) I figured I could take care of a light bulb on my own.

Took it out, put some dialetic grease on it, put it back in, works perfect.

there was a manufacturers default in the ignition switch keep taking it up there and pester them ask for a rental car and they will fix it. I brought my sat to the dealer six times before they found the problem. the grease sticks, not allowing the ignition to turn over when its cold and eventually it will not crank, and you will kill someone

well i have had no motor problems, i get a pop from 1st to 2nd in my trans every now and then... dang autos, also crap gas milage and my knobs for my climate control are messed up hard core, my defrost setting dosnt work and its stuck on the top blowers at all times. also if i have it turned all the way off it still blasts air at times... im just to lazy to get it fixed. i had the same problems w my grand am though.

I had my Eco for about two days with 200 miles on it and ever since then I have had idle problems at lights when i press in the clutch it wants to cut off, sometimes it does.I have always had the knocking sound, as well as suspension problems. I have been to the dealership atleast 20 times with no resolutions, i even contacted gm and got no response. It isnt a major deal , but i know you all probably feel the same way, your new(er) vehicle should not have these problems.i dont know about you guys but im disapointed with any of my service through gm.

2004 sunfire -- no problems to report

there is a recall for the low idle/engine shut off at stop lights -- the dealer has an updated program for the PCM that should take care of the problem. I'm not sure if this is only for the 03 models or if it involves the 04 models too.

There is a recall for the taillamps (03 models only)-- they will install new bulbs and sockets on both sides (GM didn't put any grease in the factory sockets causing them to get too hot and burn up)

There is also bulletin for the hard to turn HVAC control (vent selector) -- they will shave down the side of the door selector under the dash so it doesn't get caught up on anything.

I hope this helps anyone, if you have any questions, just ask.

I am going to try to look at my suspension when it gets a bit warmer, and the first thing I am going to do is tighten the strut mount tower bolts to get rid of the clunking I have when I corner. I will post the results, within a couple of days as I am going to try that tonight.

As for the other problems listed, my 04 Sunfire with 54000 kms on it (lots of hwy) only will burp once in a while and has not stopped or stalled, just he rpms drop a couple hundred all of a sudden, while stopped, with clutch in. It's a bit odd, but not a big deal, maybe once a month. (Car might be female) just a thought.

Absolutely no other issues, great mileage, and I love it.

OK, here is the update, the nuts are all tight onthe strut towers.

If I grab a wheel and rock the car back and forth by rotating the wheel, the sound comes from right under the engine, has anyone had any problems with the CV joints getting lose?

My old Firebird's drive shaft had some lose u-joints and it would make a similar noise if you turned it by hand.

Any thoughts anyone?

Jesus christ talk about a lemon lol. Im just playing well thank god for warranties. Personally i think that 50% of jbodies are produced half ass or sumthin. Cause i hear about all those idle issues. And im surprised i have had virtually no problems. I beat the piss outta my car cause uh i like to. I work at a shop so if @!#$ breaks ill fix it. Plus salvage pieces for the 03 cavi are cheap.
