05 Cavalier AC operation

Hi Everyone,

We just took delivery of our new Cavalier, base model with 5-spd manual transmission, factory AC, and factory cruise control installed by the dealer.
The AC operation seems to be peculiar: it is turned on when the internal fan is operated at any speed, it is off when the internal fan is off. The little button that the manual says is for turning on and off the AC does not do anything.
Is that the way it is supposed to work? Any chance that there is something miswired or is it a sofware function in the body control module?
I noticed that they miswired the cruise control a bit, there is a fuse in the ABS position (the car does not have ABS), and no fuse in the CC position (the CC works just fine).

Thanks, Peter

if your 'blow type selector' (or whatever its called) is set to 'Recirculated' or 'Defrost' the A/C will be on by default, and the button will not do anything. if in any other mode the A/C button should turn on and off the A/C.

And Yes whenever the A/C is on the Radiator fan will be on as well.

That was it, the selector was set to "defog"!

Thanks, Peter

According to the Helm Inc. Service Manuals, the only time the A/C is on is when the defrost is on, so the A/C acts as a dehumidier for the car during cold temps (keeps the windshield from fogging up) and/or the other 2 positions from fully clockwise activate the A/C. Make sure the pushbutton for the A/C isn't pressed in. Otherwise the A/C will run when the air selector switch is in any position, regardless of the air temp control. Double check the owner's manual on A/C operation. If you still don't think it's right, go to the dealer and demonstrate why to the service manager/service tech. Don't just tell them why, show them why so there is no mistake in what you think may/might need serviced.
