Ariel Atom and Ecotec Questions

Hello, I'm new to the site, and completely new to Ecotecs.

I've placed a deposit down to reserve my spot in line (#61) for a US spec Ariel Atom 2.

www.arielatom.com

The way things are currently looking I won't be able to take delivery until around the beginning of 2007, and I don't have to tell them my choice of engine for quite a while, so I've got plenty of time to do research. It's available in 2 powerplants, the Honda 2.2 I-Vtec motor, and the 2.0 or 2.2 Ecotec.

The people on atomclub.com have been raving about the Ecotec motors and I've come here to learn about them.

There are two options, a 2.2L Ecotec with 140hp/150tq or a supercharger 2.0l available in various power configurations (all the way from 200hp/205tq to 300hp/250tq).

The 2.2L version is about $5,000 cheaper than the entry level supercharged model, and will still out-accelerate a Porsche 911 TT up to 100mph. But as most everyone on this site, I love modding, and love making things even faster.

So my question is, should I go with the 2.2L version and supercharge it myself or perhaps even turbocharge? Or should I go with the supercharged 2.0L? It's a $5k difference, which isn't a huge deal, because I could see myself, spending that much or more modding the car.

Can the 2.2L run up to 250hp without losing much reliability?

Any other advice on these engines would be great, things to look out for, things that break commonly, best ways to extract more power, etc.

Thanks!
Jason

the 2.2L ecotec is reputed to handle 280-300hp max on the stock internals. check out www.hahnracecraft.com for more infomation.

GM in their own testing found it handled up to 280hp on nitrous before the rods failed.

i would personally turbo it if it was me. gm claims the engine to be 'reliable' up to 250hp, like daniel said, gm pushed it to 280hp before things started coming apart. i have heard nothing but good things about the hahn turbo kits on ecotecs.

for the internals: pistons, rods, and valve train would be the first things to go.
does anyone know what the stock block is good for?

maybe pick up the gm build book for yourself if you are thinking of heavily modding an ecotec, they pushed one out to 1400hp. someone posted it in pdf format a little while ago. if you cant find it, i can send it to you.
