MY CAR WENT CRAZY NEED HELP
Tuesday, January 19, 2010 1:13 PM
Hello everyone. My car went a little crazy today. First of all, I revved it up a lil, not much before I left to come home. While the engine was returning to idle speed I heard a pop half loud but not ridiculously loud. Anyhow, all seemed to be fine and left to come home. A few km's into my trip, I noticed my abs light, airbag light, and battery light all came on, engine light was on but it was on for a while now. Then my lights in my dash and stereo went dull, about half as bright as normal. Along with this, my stereo went slightly fuzzy when listening to my cd. The headlights also went very dull, barely visible on the road. Next thing to go weird was my gauges, the temperature gauge dropped and so did my fuel gauge, flicked the high beam lights on and it would come on, and go back down. Almost like the high beam/ low beam was resetting the gauges. Stopped the car in my driveway and it had a slight sputter and slightly lower idle speed. Shut the car off, and now it won't start. It will click very rapidly when you try to start it, I guess it is the starting motor, so I don't think the battery is dead. Interior dome light still works, about normally, and lights and gauges are on but not as brightly lit as normal. I have no idea what is wrong exactly, if I was to guess I would say something fuse or alternator related? Maybe even a solenoid? I would like to get to the bottom of this because as of now I can't use my car and I am totally stumped. Sorry for the long post but hopefully it is enough details for someone to diagnose a problem/solution or at least help. Thank you

Hey guys, feel kinda stupid now, it's the alternator belt, or lack there of. Seems it has snapped and now isn't there. Sure explains the popping noise. A moderator can remove this topic.

I most cases, just as you described, the alternator has gone for a crap. Thus your battery is almost dead. The starter only clicks because it doesnt have enough power from the battery.

Chances are your alt is shot. but first, check your battery connections, make sure they are clean and tight. Check the power connection at the alt, and the starter, make sure they are clean and tight. There is a ground that comes off the battery to the chasis/body and to the engine(might be the same wire), make sure it is clean and tight.

Even though it doesn't sound like a fuse problem, check them anyways.

If you have a battery charger, charge the battery. If you don't, try boosting it off another car, and see if it runs. If it runs, and you have a volt meter, check the voltage. The voltage should be around 13.6-14.4ish. That's what mine used to charge at when I checked it.

Fill out your profile so we know what kinda car you have and mods etc. The more info the better.
