Ecotec ignition..

What tells the computer when to fire the plugs? Is there a trigger wheel on the cam or crankshaft? Trying to use an aftermarket computer system and need to know how it is triggered.
Thanks.

Phil,

I don't know if you still need the info, but I read somewhere that the ecotec's take their timing signal off of the #5 counterweight of the crankshaft. I assume that it's either an inductive pickup or Hall effect sensor.

They don't make it easy on these distributorless engines, do they?

Thanks Steve. I found it the other day when I took my extra engine apart. It uses 6 evenly spaced notches and a seventh notch at 55deg atdc. 7 notches for a 4 cyl, no idea what the engineers were thinking. LOL
I may have to rig up a crank trigger to use the ecu setup i want to.

Thanks again.

Actually, it's a good number of things that tells the computer to signal the spark.
