ECOTEC TURBO / PERFORMANCE UPGRADES FOR SANDRAIL
Friday, June 30, 2006 11:48 AM

I am currently building a new 4-seater sandrail and i am looking at using a 2.2L ecotec motor for it. I am considering putting a turbo on it but i am not sure if the bottom end will hold up without modifying it? I plan on using the haltech 6x computer to control the motor. I would like to be in the 190-200 hp range at a minimum. My other option is to get there (or closer ) by use of a cam. Comp-cams has as cam shaft that is for off road that they claim will give me 15-25hp that with the header should put me around 185-195hp. I will probably be running the 2000-6000 rpm range with bottom end torque an important factor. Is there a good after market intake out there also ?

any words or wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

THANKS
MIKE

WILL THE STOCK ECOTEC BOTTOM END SURVIVE A TURBO?? WHAT KIND OF A 1.9 DID YOU USE?? DO YOU KNOW WHAT KIND OF HP IT HAD? I AM BUILDING A MID TRAVEL CAR SO I SHOULD NOT BE AS HEAVY AS THE NEW LONG TRAVEL CARS.

mike the 1.9 is from a 92 saturn . your bottom end crank and block is almost bullet prof. you need to get gm's performance book it list's needed part's in hp stage's stock to 1200hp from your gm part's counter .i found my book on ebay . sand cars semm to tolerate more boost than street cars sand car's only need short burst's of boost the 1.9 above has only made 3 trips out one of my buddy 's 1.9 has been runing for 4 year's he is running 10psi of boost after the inercooler i run 12-14 after my outher car run's a3.1chevy with added turbo been runing it 5years 1.9 probly 240-280 hp good fuel keep's these motor's alive 1.9 mod's are 35# injector's and boost sensing fuel pressure regulator 3.1has regulator only and run's12psi and no intercooler fuel is mixed = 100 oc low lead and premeum mix 50\50 add 20% tolulene (100LL) is aircraft fuel. if you can fab most of your parts a turbo is lot's of cheep hp remeber hp= fun

Mike, I am doing a eco in my sandrail right now. Justthe stock eco with aftermarket computer will give you 170-175hp. With the turbo you will be at 250-275 with lower boost(7lbs or so).

can you run the turbo with the stock bottom end if you keep the boost down?? I understand the compression ratio is 10:1 which seems high for a turbo? What type of computer are you going to use?

Yes you can run the turbo on the totally stock motor. Make sure to run an intercooler on it. And stay to 10lbs of boost or under. I am using the Haltech e6x on mine. Just getting reay to start the job of wiring it up.
If you want something easy to get setup with, you can call TurnKey Engines and get a Delphi MEFI computer and harness. It works well for a stock motor, but not sure if their tune would be right for a turbo motor, but you could ask them. I didnt want it because I cant tune it myself.

I was planning on running the haltec also for the same reasons you stated. Any recomendations on the turbo without an inner cooler? I don't want the clutter. The 2180 cc VW's use the t3/t4 combo on them which seems to help with the turbo lag or is there another combo?

if you don't want the clutter of an intercooler you could do a small side mount off of like a dsm or vw or even go the air to water intercooler route, but if you dont use one i would just keep the boost down to arround 5-8 lbs so you don't heat the intake charge up to ungodly temperatures. orrrr i've never seen it done but Cryo2 had a silicone coupler with built in cooling vaynes filled with co2 that was meant to gretley reduce intake temps... just a thought tho..

Mike, my Haltech is for sale. Doing a Megasquirt on it instead. Should be running in a couple weeks, since it lost oil pressure and killed a rod bearing. Putting in the Wisecos and Eagle rods for the turbo now.

out of couriousity why are you going to the megasquirt instead of the haltech? Mine is quite aways away from needing a computer its a bare frame in the garage.

In order to use it on my motor i would have had to fab up a new crank trigger setup. Apparently the Haltech cant handle the 6+1 crank trigger. It works awesome with the later motronic triggers though.
the megasquirt ecu, harness and install and tuning cost was only 1500.00, where the haltech ecu and harness alone were 1200.00. All being done by the guy that wired up my car before.

Hey MTNBUGGY - I barely check this site - im mostly on JBO. I have been running around on the streets in a 2002 2.2 Ecotec powered turbo cavalier for 3 years now. Completly stock motor and its running great. These motors are awesome, so long as you keep them happy with extra fuel. any questions, let me know.

check here for pictures.

im runnin 9lb of boost on my stock ecotec and i havnt had a single problem yet. im also pushin 209hp. the ecotec is a great platform!! with just the proper re-tuning you gan get 168hp out of it with out anyother mods. im planing to get to 425 and call it quits

I like your idea of re-tuning stock eco to get 168 hp out of it without any mods. That would be something like altering fuel management?
could you specify how you did it? (assuming you have done it)
ThnX in advance

to do the tune you need 4 things, laptop, HPTuners software, dyno machine, and a bit of time

I just got my ecotec running in my sandrail. It has head and main studs, eagle rods, wiseco low comp pistons, and SCE titan copper headgasket, converted to solid lifters and put better valve springs. I build a log style turbo header with a t3/t4 turbo. Have been running it at 26lbs of boost. Thing screams in a 1700lb tube frame. The solid lifters let me take it to 7500rpm(so far). Gonna limit it down to 10lbs of boost to try to keep my trans alive.
Here is a short video of it idleing when I first got it started.

i work at Ram full scale machine shop and when my stock 2.2L eco was running 12lbs of boost all day and i have had no problems at all no fuel injection upgrades nothing but an old td05 evo3 dsm turbo with my stock header with my own home made adapter plate that i made the 2.2 can run 8 to 12 pounds of boost with no tune or injectors its a great motor and that was in 06 when i first got the car now with a tunefor more fuel mapping and air mix and injectors and cams with metal head gasket new stronger head studs and a alumin lower intakemani im pushing 26lbs of boost with no proble3m easy..with auto trans ..with meth injec and 50 wet shot of nos it runs well and i have had no break downs except front tire flats burn outs so please do not listen to most when they tell you cqant run more that 8 pounds safely stock its bull and i have owned over 10 of these cars 2.0 eco 2.2 eco and the 2.4 tested and prooved that the 2.2 is bad ass and can hold 12 pounds of boost stock no problems..
