There's probably nothing wrong with the cams or their install, they're probably just very aggressive cams. They were probably intended for racing purposes where the red line is 8k, and not street use.
Ever hear a race engine try to idle?
This is why you stick with 'performance' parts and not 'racing' parts; you're car isn't a race car and you'll only lose driveability if you try to make it such.

well these were supposed to be "performance cams" but instead were too "aggressive" thats why i'm getting rid of them.
MY 2003 SUNFIRE
i have a 02sunfire gt 5 speed and i have stayed at the back bumper of a 03 grand prix limited supercharged i ran a 1/4 in 14.9 stock now i run a 1/4 in 14.2
Welp... Got her dyno tested this weekend.
05 automatic sedan.
116 HP 127Ft.Lbs TQ to the wheels.
112 WHP and 120 Ft.Lbs to the wheels is what is advertised (140Hp 150Tq to the crank)
So to the crank my car has: 146HP and 158 Ft.Lbs of torque. No real modifications (drop in K&N and intake resonator removed).
Yeah seeing the responces on here i am probably going to be told I'm full of $H!^. My friend has a 2004 Dodge Ram Hemi with a Flowmaster exhaust and 22" wheels and I was able to stay with him in my cavalier which is bone stock and only one week old to me.
I have a very fast Ecotec Cavalier, and I've beaten a Prelude SH, Rsx type S, Celica GT-S, Eclipse GT and GTS, blah blah blah blah. I beat the GT and GTS Eclipses from a roll (because that was all we could do), and all the others from a dig. Oh yeah, I ran a 2000 Camaro RS today and we were dead even until I hit 3rd gear, which I then started to pull. The guy in the Camaro had a nice exhaust system, but that was all I noticed.
People always ask me if my car has aftermarket cams, but it doesn't. Also note, I didn't completely walk all over the v-6 cars. They were only about a car length or so away by the time I hit about 80-90mph. Nevertheless, I am very satisfied with my car and the thing is pretty quick for what it has.
My mods:
Cone filter (open element)
2.25" Cat-back exhaust
I ran a 9.790 at the 1/8 mile track on the stock 14's rims and tires. I'm sure I'll get a better time with some better rubber.
Peace,
Sasuke
you running boost your not telling us about?
ECOTEC DECALS NOW FOR SELL. EMAIL ME.
I will tell the original message creator why his car might go faster and seem more powerful than it should. This has to do with your camshafts. They are adjustable electronically. If anybody has ever done a timing belt on their car, you know that you must have the timing marks lined up 100% or else what a waste of time. Well, not with the ecotecs. So long as you put all the marks roughly close, you engine will adapt, and move the camshafts to where they need to be. Now, it is a possibility, that your sunfire was a little screwed up during production, like everything built, there are always defects. But this defect benifits you. I have talked to a AC Delco rep. from the east side of Toronto, he has a program, which you can alter the position of your camshafts, change all you fuel and air ratio's and anything else you want, producing up to 1100hp. Now you can pick and choose pretty much and power rating that you want so long as you stay in the 14 to 1 fuel to air ratio. By allowing the camshafts to be an any position during any time, you can open all four valves during an intake stroke, at it will be like having 2 superchargers per cylinder. The outcomes are amazing. Anybody who has heard of this, let me know.
I dont believe you, if you opened all 4 valves on the intake stroke you would suck exhaust gasses back in, plus it would lean out like crazy, and the exhaust cam would have to spin twice as fast to catch up. Your FOS.

Yeah man, I hate to tell you this, but who ever told you that was full of crap. If it were possible to get that much power from just cam timing there would be no point to any form of supercharging.
I wasn't aware the Ecotec had variable valve timing, and actually I was under the impression that it doesn't. That's not saying much because I don't own an Ecotec nor am I very familiar with it on a hands-on basis. Is he right about that, or is that also bogus?
And yeah, Ben is right. All 4 valves open is called valve overlap could be a very bad thing. Because gas at a higher pressure wants to more to an area with a lower pressure; gasses would pass from the manifold (intake or exhaust) with the higher pressure straight through the cylinder out into the other manifold with the lower pressure. On a NA engine, this usually means the exhaust gasses being sucked back into the cylinder and intake, preventing the precisely metered air/fuel mix from entering the combustion chamber. Hot combustion, lean burn, this is BAD. On a superchagered (this means turbod too) engine, the intake manifold pressure will at times be higher then the exhaust side. This could mean the unburnt air/fuel mix blowing right through the cylinder in the the exhaust manifold. Not only does this mean a lean condition, it also means that fuel is going to be burning in your exhaust manifold, making it a red blob of molten metal. This is VERY BAD.

neither of the ecotecs out have V V T. supposedly GM was gonna make the 2.4 eco with V V T. (from what i have read)
MY 2003 SUNFIRE
GM is using VVT on Cadillac, but it probably won't go too far down the brand chain.
Re: underestimated Ecotecs
We've seen this in Saabs for a while. The Ecopower engines (predecessor of the Ecotec) routinely dynoed with 5-15 more HP than what the factory claimed. This makes sense when you need to use the same engine in a host of vehicles. Some you de-tune, as in the case of base models where it costs less to keep cars on the same assembly line for as long as possible. You put the same engine in, but electronically limit boost, or alter the cam timing or install less agressive cams.
Others you just leave alone...
well i have a 04 alero and i find that its extremely peppy...ppl make fun of me cuz i only have a 4 banger but man...ive beaten alot of cars that i never thought i could. civics, intergras, ga...i thought i was the only one who thought that the 2.2 is a wee bit faster then they let on. i had a 03 civic with a 1.7l in it before my alero, and that thing couldnt beat a bicycle. but my alero drives like its a v6...i have no complaints!
NEW NEWS!
Some of the eco's have v v t in them, mostly the 5 speeds. I went to a course last night about these heads, and v v t was one of the main focuses of the class. Unfortunetly, it was a live broadcast over the net, but none the less it was very interesting. There is another system that works with the v v t, to make this happen. It is a spark carry-over system. What happens when a plug fires, the left over spark always grounds to a certain spot in the combustion chamber, so what they did was put in a special electronic panel that picks up the left overs from the spark, and sends it to a capacitor, while it is being sent there, the remainder of the voltage is mesured. When the next cylinder is ready to fire, the excess from the cap is sent there. Now with the v v t, if you have four valves open during intake, which creates a vacuum, thus not allowing incoming air and fuel to pass through to the exhaust, you will have a more compressed ratio then normally, which requires more juice from the plug, which comes from the cap from the previous cylinder fire. Now, I think with all these training courses, that these technologies are in current use, i may be wrong, but i will probably find out this weekend. I am go to go to my buddy's shop. He has a GM scanner that he used to change some crap in his PCM on his Grand Am and he says it will work on mine too, so we will see!
Man where are you getting all of this from?? Dealer must have some good @!#$.

I was told my car has VVT. It's a 2003 Eco 5-spd.
does that mean we can engage into "Ecotec" like hondas engage into VTEC? hahahhahahaa lol
MY 2003 SUNFIRE
I think it should be E-Tec, then we could put stickers all over are cars to
That would be way to cool

Very interesting link. I was always a little curious about how V-TEC worked.

So i got a 04 5-spd and i am a believer. Just ask my best friend Keith when i pulled is turbo charged probe to 93mph, or my buddy James schooling his police interceptor all the way to the end of 4th gear. Now my car is bone stock except for after market muffler. Plus factor in the lbs of the body kit/wing. I have just got the last part in for my turbo kit. I am very happy to say that i am the first that i have heard of to run a evo 3 big 16g (10psi) on my ecotec. Thanks to Dayton Import customs and a hook up a have we are thinking this will put me around 14's on a 1/4 mile. Now i should be around 250 Hp when i take it to the dyno. All i am saying is i am a very strong believer of the ecotec and every car/driver is different. Your car is as fast as you want it. I am a import lover but i own a cavalier and iin tilli bought the thing and started the play under the hood i was not a believer, but now i would not trade it, for anything.
David Siegel
Hahn Racecraft runs a 16g turbo on their turbo kits as well.
