Dyno Results
Saturday, February 14, 2004 5:26 PM
This is my first post. I have the ecotec powered 03 cavalier. I am attending school at UTI which gives me the privlidge of free dynos. i recently dyno'ed my stock cav w/ 10k miles. i dont have a scanner but here are my results without power shifting on the dyno.

dyno run 3=max HP 122.6 max TORQUE 134
dyno run 2=max HP 121.4 max TORQUE 131.9
dyno run 1=max HP 122.7 max TORQUE 130.8

im wondering if the ecotec even needs any backpressure so im installing an exhaust cutout before my cat and im hoping for about 20 HP. But compared to the v-tec powered 03 civic si putting 116 pounds of torque the ecotec has some good numbers

Why do they sell these cars stating, 140hp, 150lb torque or whatever when in fact it's like 120hp and like 130lb torque? why not rate the engine WHP instead of like "ENGINE HP", it's pretty weak engine compaed to the 2.4, why wouldn't they develope it to have the same as the 2.4....pretty weak engine to use in a roadster that's for sure.

the eco isnt a weak motor

ive ran 15.46 @ 91 in the g/fs cav , and alot of eco's are running close to the same times as the 2.4

well the roadster has(or will have) the 2.0 SuperCharged Eco

200HP on a Roadster ain't bad Especially if its SuperCharged

and the dealer shows HP @ the Crank
not @ the wheels

helps sell cars. and hey it worked on you

Nope, didn't work on me I Knew what the specs where before I bought it, I just don't get why a company doesn't sell it based on real specs......

Yeah, your right I must be a newbie first time ever around a car....has nothing to do with being a newbie has to with asking a question, asking question doens't imply I am a bewbie, as for "pretty weak engine" coment for a roadster that is weak compared to that of an S2000 Roadster? there's nothing special with it, so how can you consider something with a whole 120Whp a roadster other then it's looks.

You're comparing apples to oranges. The S2000 is a $50,000 240hp vehcile compared to the Solstice which will top out at 205hp with the 2.0L Ecotec and retail for somewhere around $25,000 base Cdn.
I don't think GM is after the core S2000 buyers but after the Mazda Miata buyers, there is no competition in that market segment. The entry level Miata is $27,895 with 142hp and a turbo Mazdaspeed version that will like be in the 18--200hp range, comparable to the 2.0SC Ecotec Solstice. So what does that tell you...GM is going after some of the Miata's marketshare.
The S2000 hardly equals into the equasion. If anything Honda's S2000 is after the Audi & BMW roadster buyer - the BMWZ4 ($51,800) and Audi TT ($52,775).
Your really comparing two completely different market segments and types of consumers. There's your lesson in marketing 101 for the day.
As for the Ecotec being weak, well that your opinion and don't think you'll find many people around here that will agree with you. As for the newbie comment, at least your big enough to admit it. Have a nice day. <br>

Weak engine huh???? Darn I could have sworn my weak ECOtec ran into the 15.20's numerous times. That was with just intake and a muffler.Doesn't seem like a weak engine to me.Others like QuickblackEcotec are even in the 14's with bolt-ons.Yep thats a weak engine if I ever seen one.

did you ever consider that this NUMBERS ARE AT THE WHEELS !?!?? if not then why comment. every car made and every company states those number like our ECO at 140 thats at the crank.

Dyno tests done by us in various shops are pretty subjective. Temperature, run time, cooling air, traction, fuel quality, battery condition, humidity, and much more have a wild effect on the numbers.

These factors are the same things that cause cars like the srt4 and cobras to generally dyno pretty high compared to stock listed numbers. No one tends to post dyno runs when the conditions are completely the opposite and the results are drastically lower.

SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) has setup specific guidelines for measuring engine output under repeatable conditions. These specs are generally more accurate for the general "real world" and therefore what is advertised.

How about you post the whole quote as to why I thought it was weak, I thought it was weak considering you have the S2000 with like 240 horse stock, and using a 140hp engine in a Roadster doesn't seem all the strong compared to that of the s2000 which is why I suggested it was weak......

Thanks

actually if you check out this link@pontiac.com you'll see that they are now planning to
put the big dog 2.4L ECOTEC in the Solstice that has 170hp with VVTL.

Not as 'weak' as you thought
but don't compare it to a S2000 man thats apples and oranges
and I'm sure the solstice will cost less than 40 Grand!
