2004 Cavalier Engine Oil Capacity
Sunday, October 31, 2004 9:53 AM
The owner's manual of the 2004 Cavelier that I bought here in Canada lists the engine oil capacity as 3.8 liters. However, upon carrying out my first oil and filter change, I quickly discovered that the owner's manual is wrong.

When I contacted GM I was told that the engine oil capacity for the 2004 model (this has the cartridge type filter) is 4.8 liters which I think is about 5 US qts.

What has been the experience of any Canadians out there who have changed the oil and filter on a 2003 or 2004 Cavalier? Did you find that it took 4.8 liters to change the oil or did you find that it took less?

5 quarts, and after you start it check it after you shut it off. 5 Quarts fills it exactly.

The owner's manual on my 05' says 4 US Quarts. BUT IT'S REALLY 5 AND ONE FIFTH

So they are still printing the type-o. I just say "screw it" and only put in 5. Considering it doesn't use any oil, I don't think I have anything to worry about.

My book says 5. Thats crazy lol.

% quarts brings me right to the full line. I buy a 5qt. Jug of Mobil 1 so I just pour it right in to the last drop!

Thats whats great about having a 5qt. capacity, most motor oils can be bought in a 5qt. jug, so you can just pour that bad boy in while day dreaming. lol

04 Sunfire

Oil change + filter
4 liters puts me at the center of the low-high mark at the end of the dipstick.

This thread is over one year old and I wish there was some way I could remove it from the board. In any case, I am now satisfied that my 2004 Cavalier with 2.2 Ecotec takes 4.8 liters of oil.

meh, mine takes 5.8 US Quarts of oil. any more and its over...any less and its at the add mark. and yes, i let it sit for a while after start up and then checked it. I used to change oil for a living(that was a dark time in my life, lol) and i was suprised to see it swallow all that, but it does...

I do oil changes everyday lol and the Ecotec motor takes 4.5 LITRES no more, no less

it can take up to 15 minutes for the oil to read full on the dipstick but 4.5L is your number

just changed the oil in my friends car put in 5 qts... waited 15 minutes and no reading on the dipstick bad lifter chatter... added .5 more qts got a reading halfway between empty and full.. lifter chatter went away so 5.5 quarts did it for me

By any chance could they have been talking Royal quarts, which I believe if you do the calculations, would put you pretty close to the 5 plus everybody says it actually takes?

Any Canuks out there that can verify if Canada ever used Royal measurements?
