top speeds in 3rd/4th gears and @ what rpm
Monday, July 25, 2005 12:56 PM
i own a vauxhall vx220 here in england and have achieved the following from my 2.2 ecotec ( z22se)

3rd 96mph@7000rpm
4th 132mph@7000rpm

havent been able to test 5th yet but it looks likely i can get my car to over 150mph!

and before you ask my car has been tweaked...its currently around 190+bhp/180lbft and this is without nos/turbo or supercharger!

regards

steve

I have a 2003 cavalier, with intake and catback and a fuel pressure riser. Have you had your rev limiter removed, or does it max at 7g's. Mine is only like 6400. Anyways, I'll top out third at about 130-140 (I think). But i can ride 4th till I max out at 170 with still like 500 rpm or more left until max rev is achieved. Need to remove limiter from PCM.

Your '03 cavalier will hit 170?

Easy 170 kilometers, not miles.

I got a question, how are some of these other Cavalier owners able to go soo fast in their gears? I havent done anything to my '05 Cavy but my gears go like this

1 - 25 mph
2 - 45 mph
3 - around 70, i am not sure though
4 - not exactly sure
5 - 110 (speedometer only goes to 110 and I still have my speed limiter in my car anyways)

what exactly is the fuel pressure riser?

i can top 3rd out somewhere round the 80's and 4th gear-the shift lite is set at 5600 and it comes on rite at the speed governor(05 cavy w/custom short ram intake, 2.25 exhaust from downpipe back, hi flo cat, borla exhaust-and the tach is an Autometer Cobalt Series

My car is a 2003 cavalier, thats why

The fuel pressure riser is installed after the fuel pressure regulator. Its job is it create a restriction in the return line to the gas tank. Creating this, forces the fuel to build up more pressure which causes the injectors to fire more fuel in the cylinder.

third 85
fourth 108 (fuel cut)
fith 108 (fuel cut) (all speeds in mph)

I top out 4th gear at 108 mph which is where the governor is set. I think at that point I am at or around 6k RPM.

04cavi 4sp auto-

1st- 40MPH
2nd- 60mph
3rd-105mph
4th- Dont know

Long story short, I was pissed and on a nicer streach hit 105 but let off before limiter because there was a nice corner coming up FAST. (Thank god for the sport suspension and godyear eagle RS-A tires)

03 sunfire 5-speed...pretty much all bolt-ons done

1st gear- 40mph...use to be around 25-30
2nd gear- 60mph...use to be around 67
3rd gear- 89mph...use to be around 86
4th gear- 108mph......fuel cut off

ive got a way around the fuel cut off in my 04 and me and my freind in his tiburon gt were going at it and we hit 140 and i was in 4th gear at my rev lim.

12.7@110MPH with 10PSI.

Third gear tops out at 73mph fourth gear at like 5700rpm is 108mph. Im sure the car is good for 130mph. Now just need to play with the vss. My theory is that if you cut the vss sensor signal from the pcm the computer will not recognize the vehicle speed and such wont cut the fuel when the vehicle's speed exceeds 108mph. Now for knowing what your speed is you can get a greddy turbo timer or hks turbo timer which has a speed readout and theres your speedo.

i was at 4300 rpm in 5th gear in my cav, after the calculations, it came out to roughly 118

exactly all you have to do is cut the wire from the speed sensor and run it to a switch and when you want to go faster than 108 all you have to do is flip the switch and then you can really see what your car has and also you wount put any miles on your car either.

Why is it that everyone says their limiter is set at 108? Mine is set at 112. I've hit it once, and won't ever do that again. But what's the deal?
Re: top speeds in 3rd/4th gears and @ what rpm

You can cut the vss wire, but if you have abs you are screwed, same as traction control. Not too sure if that will work, but htere is a way to do it with a scanner, but you need the GM programming. All that you do is trick the computer into thinking that there is no limit to the crank sensor, then you dont get a rev limit, and the speed limit runs off the crank sensor. Pretty sure anyways, could be wrong, but i have seen a '03 cav with it bypassed this way. We were going 220 km/h way up north down they long stretch raods.

The engine rpm upper limit before fuel shutoff for my 03' Cavalier with Ecotec is 6,500 RPM. The vehicle top speed is electronically limited by the PCM to 105/108 MPH, via the vehicle speed sensor which outputs 4,000 pulses/mile.

Have you considered researching the difference in the PCM modules on the vehicles sold in the U.K. versus those sold here in the U.S. There obviously is a major difference if you can rev your engine to 7,000 RPM and not have the fuel shutoff. There might be a market for PCM's from Vauxhalls to retrofit the PCM's on U.S. spec Cavaliers using 2.2L Ecotec engines.

and remember once you bypass the sensor and run the switch, while your drivin and flip the switch your speedometer drops to zero and you cant tell how fast your going.

I actually drove one day to find out these exact numbers. And here is what I found.

Fist Gear - 35 mph at 6,500 RPMs (lol, into the solid red just before rev limiter would be)
Second Gear - 55 mph at 6,500
Third Gear - 80 mph at 6,000
Fourth Gear - 110 mph at 6,000
Fifth Gear - 160 mph at 6,000

Now of course I didnt top out fourth or fifth gear. The speed governor kicks in at 108. And if I had the limiter disabled, I wouldnt be able to reach 160 cause of lack of power. But if you do the calculations you will find that fifth gear does open up to 160 mph at 6,000. Gears are perfectly proportional for which speed you are going at different rpms. For example, what your going at 3,000 rpms is half of what you will be going at 6,000 rpms. Go drive and test this out, try it in first and second gears. In first your going 15 mph at 3,000 rpms, and at 6,000 rpms your going 30 mph. In fifth gear your going 80 mph at 3,000 rpms. Fourth gear your going 55 mph at 3,000 rpms.

That's sounds pretty neat except for the part where the stock ecu see's that the engine is getting more fuel than needed and cuts down the pulse width of the injectors.

I'd just like to point out a little fact. Unless you change the gear ratio or the max rpm, the top speed in a gear will be the same wether or not you have 100 or 500 hp. 6700 rpm of the flywheel turning a gear with a let's say 4.1:1 ratio will give you a certain speed. So if you guys really are going faster then you have either modified the gear ratio whether it be with gears, differential, rim/tire size or by increasing you max rpm. Sorry we can't change the laws of physics.

The guy claiming he did 140mph in 4th gear at 6500 rpm is a lier. lmao Yea at 8000 rpm maybe.
I hit 120 with my Cavy all the time on the dyno.

Lets see 3rd is around 85-87-ish
4th is 120 mph right on the money at like 6400 rpm with my tires which are about 25.7 inches tall.

and 5th is irrelevant because try maxing out your 5th gear with any Turbo car if you don't blow the motor by the end I will build you one for free.
There is no fuel for the load that happens in 5th like 14.0:1 A/F on my 650 cc injectors and 20+ psi.

I hit 120-121 in the end of the 1/4 mile I just pull the VSS sensor out and plug it back in when I am done, if you do the mod you have a chance of getting pulled over at 120mph and the ticket will be a lot worse than at 105. lol

As stated above gears ARE proportional, you can do the calculations that way.
Also 335-358 hp/tq here! wheels

It is useless. i had my car dynoed with and without it. No change what so ever.
