What are your beliefs?
Saturday, January 22, 2005 9:56 PM on j-body.org
First of, a couple rules. This topic is merely to further my knowledge of other people's beliefs. It may further other people's as well and I hope it does. I don't want anyone posting that they are 100% right on something. I want to know that they believe and that be the end of it unless someone wants to know more about what was posted. No arguements unless the dispute can be solved LIKE ADULTS. This means no name calling, close-minded responses, and pointless posts. I'm just seeing what everyone chooses to believe and how that affects their lives. But please, be open-minded and think of your own free will instead of relying on your beliefs alone. For the more simple-minded people that means if I bring something up you think about it and look at all aspects of it before you decide that I'm wrong or right.

Agnosticism. <br>

And what does that mean? I haven't read up on many religions/beliefs so I'm curious as to a general summary of agnosticism is.
Re: What are your beliefs?

Agnosticism is simply an assertion that it is impossible to know, with any certainty, whether or not God exists, and even if he does, it is impossible to know anything about him.

That is the sum total of what is meant by "agnosticism." Having said that, this assertion has many potential implications, so that, ultimately, agnosticism can mean different things to different people. So, what I say about agnosticism, may not apply to all agnostics.

Agnosticism is based upon simple observation of the world. There is no direct evidence of God's existence, nothing that one can point to and say, "Here is God!" or even "There is God's fingerprint." Many religions assert that there's implied evidence of God's existence — in the "grand design" of the universe, in sacred writings, in miraculous or cataclysmic events, in personal inspiration or mystical experience, and in many other ways. Ultimately, however, all of these things are just bald assertions, based upon the assumption that God exists, therefore these things are the way they are. None of them independently demonstrates the existence of God, without resorting to interpretation.

Agnosticism makes no such assumptions, and does not engage in interpretation of events. What is, is; what is not, is not; and what is not knowable, isn't knowable.

Just as theistic religions and philosophies assume the existence of God, so too does atheism assume that God cannot exist. Just as God's existence is not evident, God's non-existence is equally not demonstrable. There is nothing observable which proves that there cannot possibly be a God. To assert that God cannot exist, is just as much a leap of faith as asserting that God does exist!

Having decided that theism and atheism are equally based on assumptions rather than observation, it's fair to ask if the central tenet of agnosticism might, likewise, be a bald assertion. The answer, quite simply, is that it is not. To say that the existence of God is uncertain, is based upon the observation that there is no proof, or disproof, of God's existence. In the face of a lack of evidence either way, one cannot assume that either proposal is true. This is a reasonable, logical conclusion, thoroughly rational, which makes no assumptions, and which does not engage in interpretation. <br>

Wow. That was an eye-opener. That falls along the lines of what I believe. You can't prove god exists or that he doesn't. Thanks for the explanation. Anyone else?

I believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God sent to die on the cross for our sins, so that each of us may have a true and personal relationship with God and may go to Heaven. For he did not come to condemn the world, but through him we may be saved. Jesus Christ was resurrected on the third day physically.(An I witness fact of 500 people by his
physical return on that third day). God is triune in nature( Father, Son, holy spirit). I believe in the living Word of the bible.
i believe that we are living in the end times, in accordance with bible prophecy after israel was to become a nation again, etc, etc. Christ will return to take up his body(the church) in what is known as the rapture. The antichrist will come into play arising from the EU. One world government will come into play( present day UN gaining power to be it) just my opinion on that from sources. All the nations will attack Israel, russia being the first through the valley of Megiddo (Megog is the name for Russia in bible). Endtimes notes; wars, famine, earthquakes along with other natural disasters, great technilogical advances, diseases, and a push for God out of society.
emergence of one world unity where one world government will create 10 zones where the chip will either be implanted in foreheads or wrist/hand area in order, not just to get food, but acknowledge the antichrist as the supreme God. God will return and judge those left behind by all that occurs in Revelations, locusts and such, 7 angels, each bringing his wrath. He wil cast satan in the lake of fire for 1000 years.
Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life. and yes I will preach it up? one love.

3 i do not believe that something created everything, but nothing created it
4 i do not believe that a bunch of nothing slammed into another bunch of nothing and created an ever expanding everything constantly growing out and taking up more nothing
5 i believe that there is a good chance i am wrong about something in 3 or 4
6 i believe that there is the possibility that there is another explaination for everything that we think we know

Atheism

I don't believe in any god and I don't support organized religion. But I do respect those that do as long as they respect me. Often when people here the word Atheist they think of the most extreme definition, I do not protest God in public schools, I don't set churches on fire, da-da-da-da, I'm all about live and let live and we can all live as people who are tolerant of each other if we have a foundation of respect. <br>

I believe in myself, I know that I am in charge of my decisions that I make.

How those situations that arise that cause me to have to make a decision I really do not know.

I believe in human rights, the right to be who you want to be, (as long as it is not killing people willfully.)

Like DualLife, agmostic pretty much sums it up.

Catholic - originally, still like to believe in something just not sure of what that is now. In todays world of a ever growing scientific proof of things, it is difficult to 100% believe one way or the other. I was raised in a very large Catholic family, but was able to make my own opinions and decisions based on what I saw, heard and learned in my life experiences. An environment that has shaped me to who I am this day. Some of my family are still very religious others are not, but we accept each other for who we are and what we believe in.

Too long to post, but i will say this upon my beliefs....

I find an all-powerful "absolute" deity a fundamental implausibility--i don't deny it can exist, but i don't see it as plausible.

I think that everything came from whatever was before it--in that nothing is ever gained or lost--it just changes state. To exp0lain this--i see it like this: life doesn't begin at conception or at birth--while some could argue thata fertilized egg is new life--the sperm cell is alive, and so is the egg cell. as such, there's no new life--there's just a changestate of life.

As for the rest, well, it's all based upon what you percieve and how you perceive it--who am i to tell you what ou perceieve is wrong? <br>

I am agnostic, yet I tend to slant more or less toward an atheistic position. I was raised Catholic and actually became quite a devote member of the faith. As I got older, I began questioning my beliefs and went through a very tough time of my life, struggling with my faith. I ultimately found myself doubting the existence of God, yet not completely denying the possibility.

Hey Bob, you sound like me. I was raised Catholic and because I was raised that way I just accepted it. I got older and questioned it more and more. Then I gave up on religion and just tried to keep it out of my life. I became atheist for about a year and had a friend that would debate the bible with me over lunch. Then she became my g/f and I ended up becoming Baptist. Girls cloud your mind....alot. After we broke up I went back to my questioning and have since became agnostic. There's always a possiblity, no matter what anyone says, that they are right or wrong. Since I don't have any beliefs set in stone I'm able to talk to people about what they believe and have some pretty in depth discussions about it.

Re: What are your beliefs?

My beliefs are complicated. I do believe in God, I do not believe in many stories found in the Bible. I recognize that picking and choosing what you want from the Bible is dangerous according to the Bible itself, but there incredible evidence that the Earth is far older than the Bible recognizes.

I don't believe the world will end as the Bible says it will. A poster above cited occurances that say we live in the end of times, however, these conditions have been met in the past - i.e. the Roman Empire, which met all the criteria at certain points depending on the ruler/king/emporer ( <i>"Endtimes notes; wars, famine, earthquakes along with other natural disasters, great technilogical advances, diseases, and a push for God out of society"</i>.

So why I do I believe in God, exactly? I was raised Catholic, went to Catholic school . However, I found incredible flaws with the religion during my teen years that I cannot overlook (i.e. they STILL don't want people to use condoms or any other birth control, ignoring over population and STD's). Anyway, despite my disagreements sometimes I feel like I'm held hostage, too scared to NOT believe in God, because if I'm wrong the consequences would be eternal and painful

I also believe in God for one simple reason... it doesn't seem that everything is explainable. When you ask the question, "why are we here?", you encounter "who put the mechanism who put us here? And who put that there?".

Another reason I believe in God, is my refusal to believe that when I die, I simply cease to exist. That's a scary thought, one that has droven many-a-people mad. <br>

Re: What are your beliefs?

Christian- non-denominational. I do not follow a set of guidelines or dogma set forth by any religion sect. My beliefs are founded due to the research I have done in the Bible and other worldy religions. I was raised in a Christian home and accepted it from the beginning. During my high school and college years I began to question the existence of God too. With more and more scientific information and doubts about religion thrown in my face I turned to God for answers rather than other humans. Most of my close friends were Christians and I could see the sense of fulfillment and certainty they had in their lives. My friends who were non-believers didn't have a clue about what they truly believed or if God existed and always complained about their lives. I decided instead of assuming that God didn't exist, since that is simple, I would assume that God existed and sought a relationship with Him to see if I would be shown any proof of His existence. I had many friends and family members who were so absolutely sure that He existed so I made a conscience decision to find out what they were seeing that I was not. Things took a while to materialize but now God has answered my prayers time and time again. Coincidence or not, these types of things had not been happening to me before I sought him. The more I seek Him the more He reveals. I do not have the answers to all the scientific questions that encircle our globe, but I have learned that God has simple answers for most of the problems in our lives and we always over analyze everything. I trust God's judgment a lot more than a scientist who can't even explain why something happens but just knows something is happening. Our world is WAY to complex and perfectly constructed to have just happened by chance.

You cannot expect Christians to physically prove that God exists, for it is only experienced by each person individually. Christians job on Earth is to love others so that non-believers will see the type of life they lead and desire to have a life similar to theirs. 1 Peter 2:12, "Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us." Many people consider themselves Christians, but with the hate and deceit coming out of their mouths they can't possibly be. 1 John 4:20-21 says, "If anyone says, 'I love God,' yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen. And he has given this command: Whoever loves God must also love his brother." So that is why I hope non-believers do not hate the Christian religion because they hate the words spoken by the so-called Christian people. True believers and followers of Christ are not these kinds of people. So that is why I believe what I do. I respect everyone for their beliefs and have never told anyone they are wrong in the beliefs or their actions, I just seek to love God and love others. <br>

Thanks AnDaZZo. Nice in-depth explanation. I guess what really pushed me away from Christianity is in your quote of John. I have an ex-g/f who's mom would say she was a good christian and I was a bad influence on her daughter and boy did she hate me. I tried to talk to her once about just being nice every once in awhile and she hung up on me. I used to attend a Indian Baptist church that only had about 14 regular members and at least half of them didn't like me for something they heard (from the mom). I know there are plenty of christians who are like you and it sometimes does draw me in and wonder what gives them that much faith. Then again, I've lost my faith and don't plan on finding it anytime soon. But thanks for the post.

James:

Thanks for the response. If you don't mind me asking - Around when did you really start to question your beliefs? My transitiion came after high school. I found out that some friends of mine changed their direction roughly in the same time period. I went to Catholic schools K-12. So, I had quite a dose of Catholicism drilled into my brain. Finally, do you feel that you are more comfortable with life and ontological issues? For me, I actually do feel signficantly better (even better than when I was a highly devoted Catholic). G'Night.
