Do You Think They'll Start The Draft?

^^^topic

Cause the way things are going now it's looking like they're going to have to start it up again since we're running out of reserves/national guard to ship over to iraq

Apparently no, Enlistment is apparently beyond what can be physically accomodated currently. I may be wrong or out of date, but there are a bunch of people that are in the military on the board, so they might be able to say.

What I can say personally is that I'm glad I'm not a US citizen at this juncture, Drafts make for poor morale, always have, because they have to take the marginal talents and lump them in with those better fit for military duty. Personally, I'd rather skip serving in a war that I did not believe in, or a war promulgated by a commander in chief whom I did not elect nor trust.

Nope, just rumors started by both sides still floating around from the election. Number one reason for no draft as GAM stated there's no need for it. Plus it'd be political suicide for anyone who passed it. A few senators talked about it last year but they had no intentions of seriously pushing for it. They said they were only trying to make a statement about the war. As far as what their statement was your guess is as good as mine.

I honestly believe if the draft was reinstated at this point in America life, that this country would see some form or civil war.

Unless WWIII breaks loose, I doubt the draft will ever come back. There are more armed forces troops than many people think and there'd have to be a pretty darned good reason for a draft or else the politician who proposed it isn't going to be voted in again.

like ive said before, our military is powerful and cohesive because all of us who are a part of it, want to be, when you start forcing people into it, it starts affecting the military in a negative way, i personally feel a draft is a horible idea and should only be used in the most extreme cases

If i remember correctly, it was a a couple of democrats that brought up the topic. They basically did it because there aren't any republican senitors that have kids in the millitary. They wanted to get the point out that rich kids, and maybe there own kids could one day end up in the war.

Well, you know if they did try to start the draft again, Bush would be under scruitiny that would make his election and reelection bids look like a kinderarten math exam.

I highly doubt there will be a draft. In fact right now the Air Force is over manned. They are offering early retirements and in some cases even allowing you to transfer from AF to the Army with a pay upgrade. Recruiting numbers are way down also. I know people waiting and have been waiting for a while to get a job in the Air Force.

Don't know how the other brances are doing though.

The military is meeting all of its quotas for enlistment and is turning people away, not because they are unfit, but not allowed by the gov't. Congress controls the size of the military. If more troops are needed they need simply pass bill increasing the size of the military. Apparently they nor the administration do not deem a draft necassary, or more troops.

However, in my ultimate paranoia and distrust of the current administration I would not be suprised to see a draft. The reserves and guard are quickly becomming a "broken force" as stated by sveral military generals and pentagon officials. Some units have been in theatre for nearly two years. Unless their is a sudden withdrawl, it would seem troops will be in Iraq for at least another 2-3 years. I dont see how the military can maintain htat and other conflicts/problems around the globe without increasing the size of the army or a draft.

And.....Is it just me or is their alot of sabre rattling towards Syria? Although they are no tooth fairies, it appears they are higher on the hit list than North Korea or Iran......

Marching into Syria, or for that matter, any other country in which they want to force a regime change would be a serious, check that, COLOSSAL blunder. Even with the Draft, I'd predict an anti-government movement that would make the 60's and 70's look like a bad frat party. The wiser course of action is to finish the job in Iraq, finish the job in Afghanistan (remember that place?) and then start pushing the NSA to secure the continental USA, and get someone that can do the job properly in the CIA's top chair.

Remember, the first part ofthe f**k up was when the whole group dropped the Ball, FBI, CIA, NSA, and US Interpol stations. The Dept of Homeland Insecurity is only supposed to facilitate communication... Seems there's less and less of that happening already.

You're being optimistic, GAM. It would make the french revolution look a sissy slapfight between Fabio and Prince.

I would say that would all depend on whether or not Prince would bring a duck into the equation.

Still, with how divided the country is now, instituting the draft or something like that would likely bring about a Civil war.

It depends on what happens in the next weeks months years.. but at this point its not looking good.. 9/10 people that were scheduled to be out of iraq already are still there... people that signed up for the 'try it for a year' deal are being FORCED to stay.. this one guy had already served 15 months of his 12 month commitment.. and they still FORCED him to go back to iraq.. he is there now.

yup, gotta read the fine print on those contracts, every single person who joins the army (not sure on the other brances) signs on for 8 years, you do x amount of years active, in my case 6 years, then the rest in the "inactive ready reserves" that means your out of the army, but can be called up to go back in the army and you have to or you are breaking the law, love government fine print dont ya

Wow... That's crazy.
Not sure about Canadian Forces, but RCMP your contract is reviewed and renewed year-by-year. You also get decent pay upgrades even as civillian employees.
