Arizona says California immigration boycott may lead to power cut
Brunei News.Net
Wednesday 19th May, 2010
A battle is looming between the US states of Arizona and California, with Arizona threatening to cut electricity to Los Angeles.

A member of Arizona's top government utilities agency has threatened Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who has made the In
This story is from bruneinews.net from May 19. Yes, it's old news, but I've been out of the country for almost a month with no Internet.

In response to Los Angeles' decision to boycott the neighbouring state in protest of its new immigration laws:

Gary Pierce, a commissioner on the five-member Arizona Corporation Commission, has told the mayor that Los Angeles power may be cut in retribution.

Los Angeles City Council decided last week to suspend official travel to Arizona and to end future contracts with state businesses because of laws which have horrified civil rights activists.

Arizona officials have defended the law, which allows police to verify the immigration status of anyone they suspect may be an illegal immigrant.

The mayor of Los Angeles has stated the law in dangerous inasmuch as the possibility exists that people in Arizona may be stopped due to race or national origin.

In a letter to Mayor Villaraigosa, Pierce said: "If an economic boycott is truly what you desire, I will be happy to encourage Arizona utilities to renegotiate your power agreements so Los Angeles no longer receives any power from Arizona-based generation."

A quarter of Los Angeles' electricity comes from Arizona power plants.

As Jason said, they may still have the ability to do so if they own more than half. However, a simple retaliation would be to put their own boycott up against CA. After all, CA is on the verge of bankruptsy, which last I heard, AZ was not. Who do you think would feel the sting more?

Game 7 of the NBA playoffs: LA is down by two with 7 seconds left on the clock. Fisher drives the lanes - dishes to Bryant on the wing, pump fakes Ray Allen- shoots and------crap the power just went out.

The idea of anyone boycotting anyone is @!#$ ing stupid - particularity in a recession. So LA is butthurt at AZ and AZ is butthurt as LA.... solution - hurt both sides in order to "make a point."

Yeah, real intelligent and mature. Sure glad those politicians are grown ups...

That aside -

Although, I appreciate the effort, the sign is in ENGLISH. This is the only sign in America that should not be.
