For me, though, it's all or nothing. If blacks don't want us using any variation of "nigger", then they can't use any variation of it either. "F*ck you" and "Screw you" have the same meanings, even though given the context, "screw" is less offensive than "f*ck".
To sum up, If you, as a black person, say "nigga", then you can't be offended when aany other person uses it in any way shape or form regardless of the melanin content of their skin. If you say it's really offensive, and don't use it, then maybe others won't.

to start off my point i will state that i am african american( i prefer black american cause i have never been to africa myself)
it is messed up for certain words to be ok in private but not in public no matter who the company
the term it self doesnt bother me in the slightest but i have gotten upset with certain people calling me that. not because they were not black but because of the tone of voice the used. i have been in situations where people have called me "homeboy" but used and aggressive tone and i took the offense. for me its more what i perceive as the intent of the word. if you use it or any other word for that matter in a jokingly manner and everyone around you is not gonna have a problem then by all means speak how you will. and how you pronounce the "n" word will a "ga" on the end as opposed to a "ger" makes no difference. the black friend who pulled you to the side may not have been trying to alienate you but protect you in the sense that not all people are as understanding as others. just cause he feels its cool for you to say it around him dosent mean that all people feel the same way,

When is the last time you heard of a "whiteboy" going "ape@!#$e" (no slur intended) for being called a "cracker" or something else.
